Welcome to Google Checkout

checkoutlogo.jpgThe first time I looked up the domain "GDrive.com" it appeared that someone other than Google had it registered. A trip down memory lane takes us to my very first article that describes how I determined GDrive.com is in fact owned by Google, despite what it looks like on the surface.

Well, by the same logic I have found that a brand new set of domains appearing to be registered to someone else were actually registered by Google on May 25th.

The domains googlecheckout.net/org/info (.com is owned by someone else at the moment) have all been registered to a company called DNStination, Inc. Don’t be fooled, the registrar is MarkMonitor — a company that prides itself on the protection of your corporate identity. There is no way they would let just anybody register a domain with "Google" in it — especially since Google is one of their clients.

Then who is this DNStination, Inc. then? Googling the address of this "company" tells us exactly who it is. The address maps directly to none other than MarkMonitor itself.

Since we know Google is behind it’s registration, what is Google Checkout going to be? I think it will be a shopping cart system to help websites accept payment for their items online. The money site owners make will be deposited into a holding account at Google — just like AdSense works.

Isn’t this starting to sound a lot like PayPal? Who knows, they could even offer a Google branded Mastercard "debit card" like PayPal’s ATM/Debit Card — after all, the domain googlemastercard.com is registered to Google too.

If this is indeed what they are planning, it would make sense for Google Checkout to tie into Google Analytics so website owners can easily track with certainty how their AdWords campaign is directly affecting sales — right through the checkout process.

Maybe one day Google will even provide an inventory management solution with an API so websites can have their inventory in Google Base and on their own website without double entry.

6 Easy Ways to Increase your Adsense Revenue

How much revenue do you generate from Google Adsense?

Recently there has been a lot of discussion about people who earn over $10,000 a month just from Adsense. Furthermore, there are rumors of a few individuals who earn over $1 million a year just from using the power of Google advertisements.

So what is Google Adsense and how can you use this program to earn a six-figure income?

About two years ago, Google created this program to help websites to monetize their web-traffic.

Here's how it works:

Webmasters obtain a special code from Google which then displays targeted ads on their website. Whenever a visitor clicks on one of these ads, the webmaster earns a commission. Unlike other online businesses, there is no selling involved. All you need to do is get people to click on the ads.

Although this is an excellent way to generate an income, many websites are not effectively maximizing their Adsense potential. As a result, they are leaving a lot of cash on the table.

The question is how can you increase your Adsense revenue without increasing the number of web visitors?

The key to earning an income with Google Adsense is to have your ads match the rest of the site, making them look like part of your content. Your focus is to avoid having the Adsense blocks look like blatant advertisements.

The following are six ways that you can do this and increase your revenue at the same time:

1) Find the right place- Most website visitors read content that is in the middle of a webpage. As a result, the best place to put your Adsense block is in the top part of the page, at the beginning of your web content. You want to weave the Google Ads into your web content to give the appearance that they are extra links which expand on the information of the page.

2) Use the Large Rectangle-With Google Adsense, you have the option of picking different ad formats. Most of the time people opt to use the Leaderboard (728x90) or Wide Skyscraper (160x600) style ads. Unfortunately, this is the wrong choice, because both look like blatant advertisements. Instead smart webmasters have found that using the Large Rectangle (336x280) yields the best amount of click-thrus.

3) Ditch the border- Many people experience a sharp increase in Adsense revenue when they changing their border. What they change is very simple…they get rid of the border on their Adsense blocks. This is another way to make the advertisements look like useful web content.

4) Adapt the font- Whenever you write content, it should be the same font size and style as your Google Adsense block. This will help make it appear that the advertisements are a natural part of your website.

5) Match the colors- In addition to changing the fonts, you also should match the colors of your website. For instance, if your content is written in black, and your hyperlinks are blue, then the Adsense blocks should also be the same color. Again, this helps the advertisements appear to be normal web content.

6) Don't have too many distractions- On a webpage, it is important to give web visitor a limited number of options. By having too many links and graphics, the web visitor might go to a section that doesn't help increase your profits. While it is important to inform and entertain your web visitor, it is also vital that you monetize your site. So if the main focus of your site is to earn an income through Google Adsense, then get rid of all non-essential links and graphics.

By taking the time to implement these six simple steps, you'll see a dramatic increase in the click-thru ratio of your ads. If added to all of the content of your site, your Adsense income will skyrocket!

Google AdSense: 7 Tips For Creating Sites That Make Money

Having a Google AdSense site is a great way to make money. And to create an AdSense site, all you have to do is have a Google AdSense account (which is free), a website or a blog (which is free), and some articles (which are free if you write them yourself). Once you get your site up and running, the AdSense ads will be targeted to your content.

Therefore, those looking for your content will come by, read your articles, and have a high probability of being interested in the targeted ads. Every time someone clicks an ad, you get paid! That is, as long as you have designed your site to maximize AdSense clickthroughs!

Let's look at seven tips for creating AdSense sites that create money.

#1: Keyword Density

Before you place ads on your site, be sure your keyword density is good. You will want to be sure that the right kinds of ads are placed on your site. A free way to determine what the ads will look like on your site is to go to http://www.resultsgenerator.com/adsense/ and type in your keywords. You will then be able to see exactly what ads would show on your site.

If you don't like what you see, then you know that you need to make changes to your keywords! You can get keyword suggestions from Results Generator from Overture or from the free trial version of Word Tracker.

#2: Focused

Not only will the ads be based on your keywords, but they will also be based on your content. You definitely want your keywords and your content to match as closely as possible.

#3: Write Often

The more information you have the better. Why? Because the more content you have, the more visitors you get. Many people suggest that you write a new article every day since no one wants to come back to your site to find the same old messages!

#4: Choose The Right Format

AdSense allows you to choose many different ad formats. Research has shown that wider ads are more successful. The top three formats are:

" 336x280 large rectangle
" 300x250 medium rectangle
" 160x600 wide skyscraper

Additionally, the 468x15 horizontal ad link under the navigation bar is also a good bet.

#5: Color Counts

You have the option to create a Google AdSense ad in any color of your choice. The best thing to do is to make your ad blend well with your site color scheme. You should make the border color and the background color the same color as your web site. You will want your text color to either be black or the color of your main content.

When creating your Google AdSense ads it is recommended to use the color scheme and style of your website so that the ads blend in well. Ads without background color and borders perfom better than ads within borders with background color.

#6: Position Counts, Too

It is well known that visitors to a website scan the site to determine if it is worth reading. You definitely want them to see and scan your AdSense ads. Therefore, the best place to put them is in the top left part of your page or directly under your headlines.

#7: Increase The Number

AdSense allows you to use up to three AdSense units on a page, two AdSense search boxes, and one unit of ad links. Using all that you can increases the chances of earning money.

Keep these seven tips in mind when creating your AdSense site and you will find that your clickthrough rates increase, thus increasing your money making potential.

Adobe Acquires Video Blogging Software Company

Adobe is seriously getting into the blogging and video podcasting software market.

Last month, Adobe introduced Adobe Captivate 2 with closed captioning that can make audio podcasts more acessible plus you can distribute the same podcast with subtitles in differents languages so that it appeals to a wider set of audiences globally.

Then came Adobe Contribute 4 which Adobe is promoting as a blog editing tool for corporates and organizations offering tight integration with frequently used Microsoft Office programs.

Today Adobe announced that it has acquired Serious Magic, developers of VlogIt and Visual Communicator, which are hugely popular among video bloggers for creating vidcasts and even corporate presentations.

While the video editing capabilities offered by Serious Magic tools are not so advanced as Adobe Premiere Pro, they do offer extra features like scrolling transcripts, transitions and support for video blogging formats that makes the entire process of creating and publishing video blogs very fast and simple even for non-technical users.

I think Adobe would take the extra vlogging features of Vlot It! and integrate it with their Adobe Premiere Element software which is a scaled down version of Adobe Premiere Pro. Better still, if they also release a separate video blogging add-on for Premiere.

Other than the blogging advantage, Adobe also gets the popular Chroma Key technology of Serious Magic [ULTRA Vector Keying] which can pefectly replace green screen with any custom background video scene even when the greenscreen is not properly lighted. ULTRA is already compatible with Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, and Flash Professional.

It is hard to guess Adobe's plan for Ovation, which is another popular add-on for PowerPoint to make the animations more jazzy and real. Maybe, they could integrate them with Adobe Presenter.

Overall, this is a significant development and we could see more innovations in the video podcasting area emerging from the Adobe Headquarters.

Adobe Employee Reactions:
John Dowdell - "what I can tell from internal buzz, you might want to keep your eye on the longterm significance."
Steve Kilisky - "The thing that stands out most for me about Ultra is that it gets great results in less than ideal lighting situations and you don't have to fiddle with a lot of knobs and sliders to get acceptable results."

Techsmith also just launched Camtasia Studio 4 which allows you to create, edit, and publish screencasts as well as audio/video podcasts.

Video blogging could be the next big thing after text blogging. Do check out some excellent video podcasts at Podtech.net especially the Scoble Show. [Disclaimer: I work with Podtech]

Clean Virus Infected iPods [i.e. remove RavMonE.exe]

If you own an iPod with Video, this is a must-read FAQ:

Are all iPods infected with Virus ?
Apple says that only some Video iPods shipped after September 12, 2006 could be carrying the Windows RavMonE.exe virus.

Are Mac users affected with RavMonE.exe ?
No, this virus exists only for the Windows Platform.

How to Remove iPod Virus on Windows ?
While any Virus scanning utility can remove this iPod W32/RJump.worm, an easier approach would be run the McAfee AVERT Stinger that just detects and removes specific viruses from your system. Now attach the Video iPod and run the anti-virus program. You can then use iTunes 7 to restore the iPod back to the factory default settings though this would delete all existing iPod data like music and videos.

Which iPod models are affected ?
Only Video iPods can potentially carry the worm. The iPod nano and iPod shuffle are safe.

How do I know if my computer is affected with iPod virus ?
Attach your Video iPod to the computer and run the Trend Micro Housecall utility which is an online virus scanner that can detect malware and even remove the infection without you having to install anything on your computer - a good alternative when you want to remove the iPod virus quickly or don't have the admin permission to install new software on your machine.

Technical description of the iPod Video Virus
McAfee explains that W32/Rjump.worm is a worm written using the Python scripting language and was converted into a windows portable executable file using the Py2Exe tool. It attempts to spread by coping itself to mapped and removable storage drives and also opens a backdoor on an infected system.

Apple is not missing the golden opportunity to blast Microsft and put the blame on the Redmond shoulders - "As you might imagine, we are upset at Windows for not being more hardy against such viruses, and even more upset with ourselves for not catching it."

Be Very Careful When Editing Blogger Templates, Serious Bugs Found

A word of caution to all Blogspot users who are still on the old Blogger platform.

There are some serious bugs in the template editing feature (introduced only recently) that will change your important Blog settings like date formats, comment moderation, etc whenever you edit and save your custom Blogger templates.

Here's a description of problem that I been seem to occur very often in the recent days:

1. While editing a template, if you preview the changes two or three times and then save the template, it will internally modify the blog archive settings such that the "Enable Post Pages" setting will be switched off. That means all your permanent URLs will be gone.

2. The above bug also modifies the Archive Index Date Format that you generally see on the right sidebar of this blog.

3. Today, it was worse. I made a small change in the blog template and it completely ruined by Comment settings. Almost all the values were toggled including the "Enable Comment Moderation" setting.

While I don't have steps to reproduce the above problems, they keep happening whenever I change my templates. So make sure you are not facing similar issues - always double check your old Comment and Archive settings whenever you change the blog templates.

Hindi Kalam: Type Hindi using English Keyboard, Mix Other Languages

HindiKalam.com is a new website for writing text in Hindi with English alphabets using the standard QWERTY keyboard. [Kalam means a Pen]

While the Hindi typing features in Hindi Kalam are much similar to the popular Quillpad , one feature that simply rocks in HindiKalam is the Hindi Spell Checker - a a big help when you are unable to form those complex Hindi words using any permutation of English characters.

Hindi Kalam has this additional feature where you can also mix text from any other language like English, French or even Chinese. Just enclose the text inside square parenthesis and HindiKalam would skip converting that to Hindi.

Though Quillpad lets you type in most Indian languages, Hindi Kalam, as the name suggests, is limited to only Hindi.

Hindi Kalam - Writing Hindi was never so easy

Thanks Devashish Fuloria for the tip who writes "The best thing is that it works according to the QWERTY keyboard making hindi writing very easy for rare users like me."

October 17, 2006 Compare Advertising Rates on Popular Blogs

Do you know how much money advertisers have to shell out to run ad campaigns on highly trafficked blogs ? Read the following comparison of the advertising rates on the three most popular blogs on earth.

TechCrunch.com - This Mecca of Web 2.0 generation generates over 2 million page views per month and advertisers can rent prominent 125x125 banner space on Techcrunch for a fee of $10,000 per month which translates to a $5 CPM. A skyscraper on Techcrunch available via Federated Media is priced at $20 CPM which is roughly $40k for a month.

Lifehacker.com - The average CPM for image banners is $8 while a 7-day text link on Lifehacker is available for $100. Lifehacker receives around 200,000 views per day so a month long banner campaign on Lifehacker could cost you $48k @ $8CPM.

BoingBoing.net - This directory of wonderful things handles close to half a million hits per day. A 125x125 text ad on BoingBoing costs $350 for a week while rectangular banner ads are available at $20 CPM. If you advertise via Adbrite, a text link for a week on BoingBoing will cost you $500.

On a related note, the Sponsors Kit for Digital Inspiration is now ready.

Looking for some inspiration to wake up early in the morning and jog ? Watch this ad picked from youTube.

The iPod becomes your personal trainer giving feedback on the number of miles you have jogged, you average speed and how far you are from the target destination. You can later sync the workout session with your computer to track your progress.

If you don't have those extra 100 bucks to spare for the Nike sports shoe, the wireless sensor + iPod Nano combination can work with even your existing pair of shoes. No more excuses.

Yahoo Blog Search Engine Gone Forever ?

Yahoo! Blogs search engine was removed from the Yahoo! News homepage some two months ago and it's nowhere in sight yet.

Initial rumours suggested that Yahoo! may have taken the tool offline in order to completely revamp the blog seach engine in order to bring it at par with Techorati, Ask.com or Google blog search.

Unfortunately, that has not been the case so far. The old Yahoo blog search homepage (blog.news.search.yahoo.com/) now silently redirects visitors to the Yahoo News search page (news.search.yahoo.com/).

There's no single update on the official Yahoo! Search blog or Jeremy Zawodny's blog. Makes me wonder if this is the silence before the storm or the storm is dead ? I would put my money on the latter assumption. What are your thoughts ?

Use Google as World Clock To Determine Current Time Around The World

What time is it in Las Vegas at the moment ? That's the first thing you want to know before calling your client or friend who's based in Las Vegas, Nevada or any other different time zone.

A very simple and quick method to find the current local time in any city or country is via search engines - just type time in [City or State or Country Name] in your favorite search engine or even inside the Firefox search bar to instantly know the local time of any global location.

While Google, Yahoo and Ask.com support the time search syntax, Yahoo and Ask seem to have better algorithms than Google and they also support a wider set of cities.

For instance, a query like "Time in USA" or "Time in Russia" would return no results in Google since these countries has multiple timezones. However, Yahoo and Ask.com would return the current local time of their capital cities which is an intelligent approach.

Ask.com is even better since it offers suggestions for related cities in other states or if a city with the same name exists in different states or countries. [for instance, Washington is in US as well as England]

Ask.com also supports zip code of US cities. So a query to find the local time in Manhattan, NY would be "what time is it in 10005". Great time saver.

Cellular Phones – Things to Consider When Buying a Phone

Staying connected with a cell phone has become a way of life for most people. As a result, there are many types of cell phones on the market. Knowing what is important to you in a phone can help you decide which cell phone to purchase. The following is a list of things to consider.

1. The size and weight of the phone. Some people like the smallest phone they can buy while others want something substantial.

2. A phone with or without a flip cover. A flip cover can protect your keypad, but it may also be cumbersome.

3. The option to use the phone with a speakerphone. This is especially helpful while driving and talking on the phone.

4. A phone with a built in camera. You can be prepared to capture that great shot at any time.

5. Color display. Color really helps when surfing the web and taking digital pictures.

6. A phone with a built in PDA. Stay organized and have phone numbers at your fingertips. Check your schedule and talk on the phone at the same time.

7. Your budget. Cell phones range in prices, but usually are less expensive when also purchasing service.

8. Overseas usage. You may not need this often, but when you do, it's very convenient.

9. Text messaging capability. This is another great way to keep in touch.

10. Accessing the Web. Stay connected to the web and look up information anywhere, anytime.

11. Ability to use your phone as a walkie-talkie. This is good for quick conversations.

12. Ability to download unique ringtones. Make your phone fun by choosing your favorite song as your ringtone.

13. An MP3 player. Take your favorite tunes with you wherever you go.

As you can see, there are many options available in a cell phone. Of course, the more options you choose for your phone, the more expensive it becomes. But if you want to stay connected, you’ll be sure to find the best phone for you if you consider all the options.

Internet Email Hacks: Get Notified When Your Email Message is Read

Digital Inspiration reader Neeta Shamdasani is looking for a workaround to get email message delivery confirmations and read receipts for her emails. She writes - "I need some help on keeping track of the emails I send i.e. I want to know the status / confirmation about the mail I send whether the person has received and read my mail."

Currently, none of the web-based emails, including GMail, Hotmail or Yahoo Mail, offer any kind of delivery notifications or read receipts. Even when you send a message using Microsoft Outlook, Eudora or Lotus Notes (that allow you to request read receipts), the Internet email service would simply ignore the request and you may never get to know if the message was read by the recipients or caught in the spam filter.

There are however two tricks (rather hacks) that will help you track if your web email message was opened or read by the recipients.

The first and easy option is to sign up for a free account on statcounter.com. Goto the install code options, choose invisible tracking button and HTML only counter. Statcounter will now provide you an HTML Image snippet that you have to insert inside the body of your HTML email message.

Don't worry, the tracking image won't be displayed on the recipient's computer as the couter.gif file that gets downloaded on his side will be a 1x1 white image invisible to the human eye. As soon as your friend opens up your email, it will show up in your statcounter logs. You will know the details like date time when the email was opened and the IP address of his computer.

While the above option is easy to implement, it won't work if the recipient has configured his email client to block downloading of images from the internet automatically. In that case, we can try another method which uses the advanced features of Google Analytics, another free software package.

Here's the second approach that involves embedding a tracking code in an external link which will be pasted in your email message. Whenever the recipient clicks on that link, your analytics software will record it implying that your email was read by him.

The advantage of this method is that no image is downloaded on the client's side but it could fail if the recipient doesn't click the hyperlink. So make the link text compelling and interesting enough to tempt him to visit the target webpage.

Assuming you have some website or even a single webpage, install the Google analytics tracking javascript code on that page. Now goto the Analytics URL Builder and create a custom hyperlink for your email message that will point to the particular webpage above.

You can type "email-to-friend_name" as the Campaign Source and "email_subject_date" in the Campaign Medium. Click generate URL and put that in your email message. Now when your friends click the URL, their visit will be recorded instantly.

Not always reliable but it works. And if you are sending the message to multiple recipients, you can change different "campaign source" variable in each of the email message to track their response in a more detailed fashion.

Who Will Win The Online Office Race ? Google, Zoho or Microsoft

Google has declared an 'all out war' against the cash cow of Redmond [read Microsoft Office] by acquiring Writely and then merging it with Google Docs & Spreadsheets. Now Microsoft is also planning to release an online version of Microsoft Word and Excel based on Microsoft Works Suite.

Closer home, Zoho is innovating even faster. They have launched a complete suite of online Office applications that are more sophisticated and feature-rich that competing Google products. And Zoho Office suite includes tools for presentation, project management and a visual database, which are still missing in Google Office.

Most corporates would never ever consider putting their confidential Word documents or Spreadsheets on external servers (no matter how secure they are) and this could hurt the growth or usage of online office applications in the corporate world. So Zoho has a good chance of winning here since corporates can deploy and host Zoho Office suite inside their protected environments - the data will remain safe since it would reside on the company's own servers.

Google and Microsoft plan to monetize their Online Office applications via contextual advertising but Zoho is likely to maintain an ad-free policy. Instead, Zoho plans to make money from organizations who buy site licenses for deploying Zoho products inside their corporate intranets.

While I am not a very big fan of Online Office programs because they work inside "buggy browsers" which are prone to crash for no reason, I still use these apps quite often especially when I am working on a computer without Microsoft Office or when I have to share a document with different people.

For me, a perfect app would be one that can automatically sync the offline and online version of the document. Say I make an edit to the online copy of my Sales report, now when I open the old and outdated copy of the sales report residing on my local computer, the program should prompt me to merge the new changes from the online version. Once I am done editing, the offline changes should be propogated to the online copy.

It now seems that Microsoft is thinking on similar lines which will make it standout from the rest of the Office race.

According to Antoine Leblond (corporate vice president of Office Productivity Applications), Microsoft is focusing on online services designed to integrate with Office, a strategy hoping to find the best of both worlds. "The future of software is going to be the combination of client applications [like Office] and [online] services"

Leblond also mentioned that Google will find it increasingly difficult to add new features to online software because its programs rely so heavily on the limitations of Internet browsers.

Now that's an intelligent strategy and could make the going tough for Google unless the search engine decides to offer an destkop version of their Word Processor and Spreadsheet software. Who knows if OpenOffice or Corel Wordperfect land up in Google's stable to counter Microsoft's winning plan.

Google Brings Video Uploading Features in Picasa Web Albums

Google is offering video upload facility inside Picasa Web Albums to all those users who have upgraded to a paid version of Picasa [available for an yearly fee of $25 to US customers only].

You can watch a sample video clip inside a Picasa Album here. This video was uploaded by Haochi, who discovered the video upload feature in Picasa from ZMarties. [via Philipp]

While the resolution of videos on Picasa Web is just the same as other videos on Google Video website, the only difference here is that videos are stored in your own personal space and you have absolute control over visitor comments on your videos. You also get 6 GB of extra storage space to save your video files on Picasa.

While the $25-6GB deal sounds good, why not use the "unlisted feature" of Google Video to upload private videos and share them with only those people you want to see them. And unlike Picasa Videos, there's no storage restriction on Google videos.

How to Restore the Missing Show Desktop icon on the Quick Launch toolbar

The Show Desktop Icon is not a standard program shortcut but a Windows explorer command file written in plain text.

If you have accidently deleted the Show Desktop Icons, here're the steps involved to recreate it:

Step 1: Open a new notepad file and type the following text:

[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop
Step 2: Save this file as "Show Desktop.scf" - remember to use the quotes else notepad may save it with a .txt extension.

Step 3: Use the mouse to drag the Show Desktop.scf icon to the Quick Launch toolbar or another location where you want the shortcut to appear.

Alternatively, you can press the Win+D shortcut key for Show Desktop. It's much the same as Win+M which will minimize all the open windows to the task bar.

Windows that don't have a minimize button are minimized using Win+D but not with Win+M. That's the simple difference.

Mozy: Online Data Backup Service That's Free, Automatic & Very Simple

If you are not taking regular backups of your digital camera photographs, iPod music, Outlook emails, Office documents and other important files on your computer just because you don't have the time to burn CD's or DVD's, consider using Mozy.

Mozy is a free service that will automatically backup your data offsite with minimal effort. The Mozy client runs on Windows XP and will take incremental data backups meaning it will copy only stuff that has changed since the previous backup operation. So after your initial backup, your subsequent backups should be relatively quick.

And if disaster strikes your hard-disk, Mozy can easily restore the data by downloading from their online server with the click of a button.

Even if you are regularly taking backup on USB thumb drives or CD's, Mozy could still be a useful alternative to take backup of backups. The set it and forget it approach of Mozy makes the data backup job so simple that even your grandma would love to use Mozy.

A useful feature in Mozy is when you when you delete a file on your local computer and continue to back up using Mozy. Though the file is removed from the current backup set, Mozy will keep a copy of that file in older backup sets just in case the deletion was accidental.

The free version of Mozy will back up 2GB of your documents on two computers. In return, they may send you email newsletters with sponsored links. Alternatively, you can choose the Mozy Plus service that provides 30GB of backup space for $4.95/month. A Mac version of Mozy is also expected soon.

Don't wait for the next internet crisis. Mozy your important files now.

AdSense Introduces Multiple Custom Channels

Today, AdSense made it possible to assign multiple custom channels to a single ad unit which will enable you to track your ad performance with greater flexibility. Up to 5 custom channels can be added to a specific instance of ad code.

What’s the benefit of tracking with more than one custom channel?

Well, multiple channels can be very useful when you want to track one ad unit across several different metrics simultaneously. For example, let’s say you run a sports website and you’ve placed a leaderboard at the top and bottom of every page. To track the performance of the ad placement, you’ve created two custom channels — ‘TopLeaderboard’ and ‘BottomLeaderboard’ — and regenerated your ad code appropriately.

But what if you also want to compare your football pages and your baseball pages at the same time? With multiple custom channels, this isn’t a problem. Just create two new custom channels called ‘FootballPages’ and ‘BaseballPages’, and add them to the appropriate ad units. Now your leaderboards will each be tagged with two custom channels that let you know which position they’re in (top or bottom), and the type of page on which they appear (football or baseball).

Right now, I don’t think this will be of much use to me, but other AdSense Publishers might find it useful.

Convert Email Messages or Word Documents to PDF Online using Google Docs

Here's a very simple way to create PDF files online without buying expensive PDF tools or installing any virtual PDF printer drivers. The output PDF file will look exactly like your source document preserving all the text formatting, hyperlinks, tables and even embedded images.

We'll use a feature in the just introduced Google Docs & Spreadsheets Suite that lets you create new online documents by emailing them directly to a secret email address. The documents can be sent as an email attachment or even as a rich text email.

Here's a step by step approach to creating PDF file from your rich-text email messages or a Word document using Google Docs [support for spreadsheets is expected soon]

Step 1: Assuming you already have a Google Account, get your unique email address here where you'll be sending the documents. [under Email-In Your Documents or Files]

Step 2: Using GMail, Outlook or any other email service, compose a new email message. Either attach your Word document or create a rich-text email message. Send this email to the address you copied in step 1.

Step 3: You will soon receive an email message back from Google Writely containing a link to your document on the Google Docs server. Open the document inside Google Docs.

You can also edit the document inside Google Docs in either HTML mode or the Rich-text mode itself. Don't forget to save your changes.

Step 4: This is the last step - click the Google Docs File menu and choose Save as PDF. Select any folder on the hard drive and your PDF is ready.

The whole process takes less than a minute.

Quick Tip: You can also use the Google Docs email-in feature to upload more than one document in a single email message.

Do You Sudoku????

Sudoku (Japanese: 数独, sÅ«doku), also known as Number Place, is a logic-based placement puzzle. The aim of the canonical puzzle is to enter a numerical digit from 1 through 9 in each cell of a 9×9 grid made up of 3×3 subgrids (called "regions"), starting with various digits given in some cells (the "givens"). Each row, column, and region must contain only one instance of each numeral. Completing the puzzle requires patience and logical ability.

Though Sudoku is fun even when played alone, it's actually a lot more enjoyable if you're competing with someone. IronSudoku.com is an online version of the game with a social flavor to it. The website basically allows people to chat with each other while playing. A new puzzle is posted at the website every day so you have 24 hours to solve it. I'm surely looking forward to solving some.

The interface of the game at IronSudoku is very clean and user-friendly and if you know the rules of the game, you can get started right away.

I would really like it if there was a way, let's say, for me to invite some friends of mine to IronSudoku for a competition online. I (organizer) should be able to pick the difficulty level of the puzzle for the event. At the start of the event, the system should start a timer ticking and pick a puzzle of the specified difficulty randomly. Every participant would receive the same Sudoku to solve from the system. And the Chatterbox should allow chatting only between the players in that competition. A visual indication should be given by the system as soon as somebody solves the puzzle. I'm sure this would be a lot of fun!

BTW as of now you have to be a Pro member to add other IronSudoku members as friends.

Google Acquires Youtube

For a few days I had been hearing news about Google acquiring Youtube which I believed was just a rumour, but now Google announced the acquisition for $1.65 billion.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., October 9, 2006 - Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) announced today that it has agreed to acquire YouTube, the consumer media company for people to watch and share original videos through a Web experience, for $1.65 billion in a stock-for-stock transaction. Following the acquisition, YouTube will operate independently to preserve its successful brand and passionate community.

I spend some time on YouTube almost daily and this is great news for me as I expect Google to improve YouTube’s service a lot more. Google Rules!

What’s your opinion on Google acquiring Youtube?

IE is faster than Firefox?

Have you always though that Firefox was faster and better than IE? Well, after watching this video at Subnixus.com, you can be sure that IE is faster than Firefox and that Firefox just seems to be fast because of the way it renders a page. The video also proves that Opera is the best browser for Windows.

20 FireFox Extensions That Every Web Designer Should Know About

Here’s a list of 20 useful FireFox extensions that all web designers should know about.

Web Developer Toolbar
Brings most FireFox options to your tool bar. It allows for a quick disable of cookies, cache, JavaScript, and a ton of other things. This is very useful when making a login script.
Web Dev Toolbar

AspellFox
It gives a spell check option when you right click in forms. I use this for WordPress, since it has no spell checker without a plugin.

RankQuest SEO Toolbar
SEO tool. It gives information on search queries including page rank. Check how your site ranks on Google with this tool bar.

OperaView
Yup we’ve all heard about IEView, so why not Opera view. This extension gives an Opera tab in your FireFox browser. Different browsers render things differently, so make sure you check in all browsers.
Opera

IEView
Yup had to include it. Same thing as OperaView except you can open a new tab with IE rendering.
IEView

Total Validator
Validate your code for XHTML compliancy, check for spelling errors, broken links, and even take a screen shot of your site with this extension.

SEO for FireFox
This extension directly adds more info into Google and Yahoo search results. Some things it adds are page rank, alexa rating, how many people link to you on Technorati, del.icio.us book marks, and much more.

HttpLiveHeaders
Directly edit your headers with this extension. You can capture, and POST back the headers you’ve sent and received. This is a great script to find out why your forms aren’t working.

View Cookies
View the current cookies for the site you’re browsing. Good plugin to check if the script you’re making is setting the proper cookie, for the correct time.

ViewSourceWith
Open images, js files, CSS, and HTML source files of a website in your favorite editor.
ViewSourceWith

If you’re trying to write a script that deals with referring information, this might be useful. It allows you to click a link without the browser having any referral information.

Load Time Analyzer
Load time analyzer gives detailed statistics on how your page loaded, and how long it took. After it’s done analyzing it produces a sleek graph of the results.

User Agent Switcher
Are you making a script that needs to know what kind of browser the person is using? Test if it’s working by changing your user agent.

EditCSS
EditCSS puts a side panel with your style sheet in it to allow for easy editing. It’s simple, but a very useful extension.
EditCSS

FireBug
Debug your code, including JavaScript and CSS.
FireBug

MeasureIt
It renders a ruler across the page so you can measure the length of the object in pixels.

FireFTP
Turn your browser into an FTP client. Easily upload your new code, without a bulky FTP client.

ColorZilla
This extension is awesome. It gives you an eye dropper, so you can get the exact hex code of a certain color on a website. I’ve forgotten the hex color of banners on my site many times. This will come in handy sooner or later.
ColorZilla

Copy as HTML Link
Copy as HTML instead of a normal hyper link. Makes posting links in your blog slightly easier. Not the best extension, but it should be mentioned on the list.

Logitech X-540 Surround Sound 5.1 Speakers for $99

This seemingly low-end X-540 surround set from Logitech certainly doesn't look low end, with its nice black finish and fairly stylish satellite design. So why is it available for under $100? We honestly have no clue—most likely from skimping out on features. However, the center speaker does feature a clip to hook onto your flat-panel LCD or plasma TV screen, which is pretty cool.

Other than that, there's talk of Logitech's Frequency Directed Dual Driver technology and 70 watts of RMS power. What's really important is the $99 price tag, which makes it a nice entry-level surround system for students or poor people.

Inside of Hard Drive: Looks Like Hyper, Robotic DJ

I'm the first to admit that sometimes we can all get a little snobby about tech. This is just a standard hd, and the speed at which it continuously functions is unbelievable.

Of course, when they fail and I lose all my data...that can be pretty unbelievable too.

How to increase your AdSense Revenue by 200%

I just came across this thread in Digital Point Forum that explains on how to increase your AdSense Revenue by 200% by filtering Made-For-AdSense (MFA) sites.

Two weeks ago, I discovered a great site showing the MFA site’s url. I added the links to my Competitive Ad Filter since there was no url before. I check my AdSense revenue daily and found out that my earnings were increasing. Since the number of clicks were not increasing, then, I realize that by filtering MFA sites I can earn even more per click.

All you have to do is go to AdsBlacklist.com and scroll to the bottom where you are asked to select your site’s Categories. Select them and click ‘Generate my new list’ to generate the Top 200 MFA sites for your Categories.

Now login to your Adsense account and enter these MFA sites to your Competitive Ad Filter to block them.

Now stay back and watch your revenue increase :)

AdsBlackList will teach you how to seek, recognize and filter low paying google ads which, in most cases, link to MFA (Made for Adsense) sites AND we will provide you with tools that will help you to substantly increase your AdSense revenue, all for free. Why would you seatle on taking $0.01 when you can boost it over $0.50 per click and double or triple your earnings ?!

I just added the MFA sites of my category and so don’t know if there was any improvent in the earnings.

Here is another tip on how to fight MFA sites.

Please do let me know if you see any improvement in your Adsense Revenue after using this tip.

Get the serial number you need !

Get the serial number you need ! (For Certain Things)

* Go to Google.

* In the search field type: "Product name" 94FBR

* Where, "Product Name" is the name of the item you want to find the serial number for.

* And voila - there you go - the serial number you needed.

HOW DOES THIS WORK?

Quite simple really. 94FBR is part of a Office 2000 Pro cd key that is widely distributed as it bypasses the activation requirements of Office 2K Pro. By searching for the product name and 94fbr, you guarantee two things. 1) The pages that are returned are pages dealing specifically with the product you're wanting a serial for. 2) Because 94FBR is part of a serial number, and only part of a serial number, you guarantee that any page being returned is a serial number list page.

See these example searches:

"Photoshop 7" 94FBR
"Age of Mythology" 94FBR
"Nero Burning Rom 5.5" 94FBR

SAMSUNG A800 SECRET CODES

The universal unlock code is *2767*637# do this with out your sim in
By default, the firmware (software) for x600 only receives java
apps and other applications like stuff by serial port.
but even for it, you have to enable the serial port, which also
causes
the closing of all other ports, even the IrDA too :-( ..
well, guess what, i have very good news for you,
do you know, you can increase the sound level,
the sound level for tones, speaker fone, etc,
can be increase even then if it is at max (level 4)
you still can do it,
just follows the instructions!

**************** HERE WE GO **************
Enter the following code:
*#8999*8378#
(You'll be shown menu, then ...)
then go to:
"H/W test"
then go to:
"Audio Settings"

then go to:
"Melody Gain"

There will you see a number.
there are five (5) Melody Levels" of it.
(and currently, you are at level 1 and after
pressing the "save" button, you will move to
level 2 and so on .........................)
you have to change the values of all the levels.
and as the resultant, it will give increase the
melody sound!, your tones will more louder,
even more louder then the max. ringing volume.
the level wise numbers are: (as its my setting :-) )

Melody Level 1: 13
Melody Level 2: 17
Melody Level 3: 18
Melody Level 4: 25
Melody Level 5: 31
you even can make your own combinations of level wise
sounding numbers that can change the sound level!.

if your combination cause more louder sound level,
then mine,
then do share it with the group! ... :-)
meanwhile, try my figured-out combination!

************ CAUTION ************
if anything goes wrong,
then you can apply the master reset code,
that will NOT delete anything, ANYTHING from your
cell fone, but set each and eveything to its
default/standard setting ...
(likes, factory settings :-) )
the master reset code is:
#*7728#

#########################################
I take no responsibility of these codes are working or not,
or its effects on your cell fone
but i have tried these codes on my cell fone.
and i bet, nothing goes wrong,
but even then of my words, be carefull!,
#########################################
The code: *#8999*8378#
as i regarded it a informative code,
will tell you each and everything about your cell fone.
and in the "H/W test",
there are lot of other Audio settings,
each of them having five (5) levels,
you can change the combination, but before doing anything,
do write the defult number sequence to some place so that
you'll be then able to invert it again! .. :-) ...

MobiGuard : Anti-Theft Protection For Mobiles

MobiGuard locks down and disables a mobile handset if it has been lost or stolen.

The application sits in the operating system of the handset and can lock the handset with a simple SMS if the handset is lost or stolen. The handset needs to be unlocked by the user with a secure pin code or SMS before the phone can be re-used.

MobiGuard has a number of unique features:

* If the handset is lost or stolen when in operating mode, it can be disabled by sending a text message to the phone.
* If the SIM card is changed without MobiGuard being disabled, the handset will automatically lock.
* The handset will automatically send a text message of the serial number of the new SIM card which has been installed to a secure source you designate. The SIM number can identify the illegal user.
* The screen of the handset will display a message announcing the phone has been locked and the user should call the number displayed to have the handset returned to its owner.
* The handset can also be locked remotely by sending a message to the phone (and therefore to unlock it).

Benifits

* Detects when the SIM card has been changed and requests the Pin. If not given within a minute, the phone is locked and the phone number sent to the buddy.
* Choose your own Pin of up to 15 characters and change it at any time.
* Settings wizard to show you how to use MobiGuard, plus help.
* Requires the Pin to close the application or change settings.
* Runs automatically on startup.
* While locked, the user cannot exit the Lock screen. The only options are to enter the Pin, or make an emergency call. The phone can still receive incoming calls. The Lock screen is immune to overrides like 'tasking' and re-appears automatically if the phone is restarted.

Potential Uses

* Learn the mobile number of a thief or the recipient of the stolen phone. Pass the number to Police when filing a report and request that they trace the identity of the owner.
* Have your phone require a Pin on start up.
* Lock your phone at any time to prevent abuse, either directly or remotely through SMS.
* Safeguard personal data on your mobile such as the phone book and messages. Great protection for corporate data.
* Install MobiGuard on a child's phone with yourself as the buddy, and switch their outgoing calls permissions from normal to emergency only and back with an SMS.

Nokia 5110
_____________

IMEI Number *#06#
For checking the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity).
---------------------------------------------------------
Security Code 12345
Default security code is 12345. If you forgot your security code, there s so many program on the net which allowed you to know the security code likes Security ID Generator, Nokia IMEI Changer, etc.

update:
Security ID Generator (SID.EXE) and IMEI Generator (NOKIAIMEI.EXE) doesn t works with Nokia 5110
Resetting Security Code

If you accidentally lock the phone or forgot the security code, the best thing to do is check it with your local Nokia dealer. For advanced user, you can use WinTesla, PCLocals or LogoManager program to read the security code or resetting the code (You will need an FBUS/MBUS (or compatible) cable to do this.
---------------------------------------------------------
Software Version *#0000#
For checking the phones software (SW) - called firmware revision information.
e.q : Version V. 4.51 (26-03-98) will display
V 04.51
26-03-98
NSE-1

first line:
The Software Version (my guess is that this software has been used in previously Nokia-phones, what do you say?!).

second line:
The Date of the SW release.

third line:
NHE-8 has something to do with the type of phone you are dealing with. Is it GSM 900 (standard), GSM 1800 (DCS1800) or GSM 1900 (PCS1900)?
Nokia 2110, 3110, 8110(i) are all NHE types. The only thing that vary is the code after NHE- ("8").
NHE = GSM 900, NHK =GSM 1800 - The number in the end = the model (2110i = 4 etc.)
The 5110 and 6110 is called NSE-1 and NSE-3...this may be because it supports EFR (?)

update:
Newest Software Version was V5.22 (xx-xx-99)
V 05.22
01-07-99
NSE-1

If your software version is V4.00, upgrade your software version to latest version. V4.00 contains bugs that sometimes will show message,
"SIM Card Not Ready" even the card is already inside the phone.
---------------------------------------------------------

Software Update
The only thing to do (for you and me) is for us to go to the nearest Nokia dealer and make him do it for you. Just remember that it is supposed to be free (a receipt is required) so don t let him tell you anything else!
---------------------------------------------------------

SIM clock *#746025625# [*#sim0clock#]
to check if the Sim-Clock can be Stopped. This option is depen on your service provider network. (Sim-clock-stop is a kind of standby mode which will save battery time)

update:
This code doesn t work on phone with software version 4.59.
---------------------------------------------------------

Waranty Code *#92702689# [*#war0anty#]
Menu:

Displays (if there) the date where the phone was purchased (MMYY) you can here set the Purchasing Date
(Warning: You can only do this once - so be careful what you write)

The next screen has Transfer User Data? (the same option as the 8110)
To exit turn the phone off and then back on.
---------------------------------------------------------

SP Lock The Service provider (SP) lock
Is used to lock the cell phone to the SP s SIM card. Once the cell phone is locked to a specific operator, if one inserts a SIM card from a different operator the phone will refuse to accept it!
The cell phone will however accept another SIM card from the same operator.

All Nokia phones (2110 and newer) have four different SIM locks which can be used to lock the phone for up to 4 different providers. But most phones with restriction only have one lock activated. ( lock 1)
The main code used in Nokia phones is:

#pw+(master code)+Y#

This code is able to check, activate or remove Sim card restriction (SP-lock).
Use the * key to get the p, + and w chars.
Y has to be 1,2,3 or 4 - depending of what lock you what to deal with.

#pw+1234567890+1# for Provider-Lock status
#pw+1234567890+2# for Network-Lock status
#pw+1234567890+3# for Provider(???)-Lock status
#pw+1234567890+4# for SimCard-Lock status

(master code) is a 10 digit code, based on the phones IMEI number.
(I can NOT give you the master code SO DON T ASK ME FOR IT! )

Please click here to learn more about how to obtain mastercode and find out the lock status of your phone
eq. To remove restriction on lock 1 type following code:

#pw+(master code)+1#

If you just want to check your phone use 10 random numbers Eg. 1234567890 as the (master code)
eq. To check if phone if restricted on lock 1 type the following code:

#pw+1234567890+1#

Please NOTE that these codes could be used with care!
A user told me that it s only possible to type in about 3 different codes on each lock! Then something bad will happen ..therefore be careful!
---------------------------------------------------------

How can I check what locks have my phone closed?

There is 2 methods:
Use winlock to see the state of the locks, pressing Read Info. The Counter is the number of times that you have tried unlock your phone using an incorrect master code.
You can check it entering an imaginary mastercode on your phone but, it s not recommended because if you try enter a code 5 times your phone will not work anymore. By example, if you press at your phone #pw+1234567890+2# (note that # , p , w and + characters must be selected from * key) and your phone give you Code Error then your phone have lock 2 closed, if you get the message SIM Restriction Off your phone have lock 2 opened.
Look the table above to see how can check all locks:

Lock number Description Sequence to Check
1 Provider Lock #pw+1234567890+1#
2 Network-Lock #pw+1234567890+2#
3 Another Provider Lock #pw+1234567890+3#
4 SIM Card Lock #pw+1234567890+4#
---------------------------------------------------------
Unlock SP-Lock
Here is a way to Unlock your phone which is Service Provider locked, without to know SPLock code. With a Nokia 16xx/21xx/31xx/51xx/81xx that are SIMlocked to one privider you can bypass the SP lock like this:

C

C and hold until it clears display
* and hold until start to blink
* and hold until start to blink
04***your pin>#

Each time you turn your phone OFF it resets the lock, so this need to be done each time you ll turn your phone ON

The phone now says: PIN CODE CHANGED (or ACCEPTED)
and the SIM card is accepted until you restart the phone again.

NOTE: On vesion 5.04 Nokia has removed this option !

update:
There s another Nokia service provider lock generator for DOS (somehere on the net) called 5161un.zip (for Nokia 51xx-61xx models) This program uses the #pw+(master code)+1# code to unlock the phone. With this software you need to have a access to the eeprom.. Sad
---------------------------------------------------------

Bypass the SP-lock

How to open lock 1 and 4?
You will need Winlock software and MBUS cable to do this. Winlock is a Nokia service program that you can use to open lock 1 and 4, really you are closing locks when you do that, but when you write ????? at MCC+MNC and MSIN text box, the phone don t understand it and consider that it s open.

That trick only works for lock 1 and 4, but not for lock 2 and 3. If you did not know your lock type, please read our miscellaneous tips page first. or read at above section in this page.

Install winlock 1.10
Connect your MBUS nokia data cable
Run Winlock
Push Read Phone, if you have Lock 2 or Lock 3 closed you can not open your phone, but you can try change Lock 2.
Select State Close in Lock 1 and Lock 4, fill out MCC+MNC and MSIN text boxes with ??????? and Push Close Locks.
Now you can use any operator card in your phone. If you get any error when you do that do the following steps:
Select State Automatic in Lock 1 and Lock 4 and change type to User in Lock 1 and Lock 4, fill out MCC+MNC and MSIN text boxes with ?????????? and Push Close Locks.
Select State Automatic in Lock 1 and Lock 4 and change type to Factory in Lock 1 and Lock 4, fill out MCC+MNC and MSIN text boxes with ?????????? and Push Close Locks.
If you continue getting errors you must turn off your phone and reset computer and try again.
---------------------------------------------------------

How to open lock 2?

When operators companies close lock2 you can only use the contract or prepaid card for this operator, but you can use another operator company prepaid card if you know what GID1 must write.

Install Winlock
Run Winlock
Configure Winlock. Select menu Winlock->Defaults and change GID byte count to 2.
Push Read Phone, and write down GID1 info that appear in lock 2.
Insert the prepaid card from a different operator company.
We must find out a the GID1 info adecuate for our new prepaid or contract card, take a look at our GID1 list and check if your operator and SIM card type is included, if not try to get a phone that have lock 2 closed and have the SIM card type that you want to use in your phone, and read GID1 info with winlock. You can try to write the most used GID1 codes like 0000,10FF,01FF, or FFFF, etc.
Change Lock 2 Type from User To Factory or from Factory to User.
Push Close Locks
Your phone will be reset every time you push Close Locks, if your card is not acepted the GID1 is not correct, repeat from step 4 until you find the correct GID1.
If you get error you must turn off your phone and reset computer and try again.
If you want your phone accept your original prepaid card write in GID1 the code you read at step 2 and close locks.
Exist a GID1 list?

In addition to the official way to open locks that Nokia service centers use with TDB4 or TDF-4(for WinTesla) security boxes, there is two secrets methods:

Opening the phone and adding a chip inside phone motherboard. But you will loose any warranty of your phone.
Using a special software with a MBUS Nokia cable. I don t have this software. Please don t bother me asking me about that. The only thing i know about that is that a friend is removing lock 2 using a special software. He don t make this for money, only for fun.
--------------------------------------------------------

Main Code #pw+(master code)+Y#
This code is able to check, activate or remove Sim card restriction (SP-lock).

Use the * key to get the p, + and w chars.
Y has to be 1,2,3 or 4 - depending of what lock you what to deal with.

#pw+1234567890+1# for Provider-Lock status
#pw+1234567890+2# for Network-Lock status
#pw+1234567890+3# for Provider(???)-Lock status
#pw+1234567890+4# for SimCard-Lock status

(master code) is a 10 digit code, based on the phones IMEI number.

update:
I get report that told me the code didn t works for Optimus Card
---------------------------------------------------------
Enhanced Full Rate Codec (EFR)
Enhanced Full Rate will give you much better sound quality when you enable it. The new Enhanced Full Rate CODEC adopted by GSM uses the ASELP (AlgebraicCode Excitation Linear Prediction) compression technology. This technology allows for much great voice quality in the same number of bits as the older Full Rate CODEC. The older technology was called LPC-RPE (Linear Prediction Coding with Regular Pulse Excitation). Both operate at 13 kilobits.(but you take up more space on the network, so they can charge you more)

*3370# and EFR will be activated after a reboot of the phone ( consumes more power )

#3370#
and EFR will be switched off after a reboot of the phone.
---------------------------------------------------------

Half Rate Codec (HR)
Half Rate will give you bad sound quality, which gives the service provider the opportunity to have more calls on the network; and you might get a lower charge from them. (Will give you 30% longer talk-time)
*4720# Half Rate coded will be activated after a reboot of the phone ( better standby time )

#4720# Half Rate coded will be de-activated after a reboot of the phone
---------------------------------------------------------

Unblocking Code
Unblock PIN1 : **05*PUK*newPIN1*newPIN1#@
UnBlock PIN2 : **052*PUK2*newPIN2*newPIN2#@
---------------------------------------------------------

Hiding your phone number
Dial 141 then the number you want to call eg. 141#######
This should stop your number been sent to the caller. (*)
(*) This only works on UK phones, if anybody has tried this and works, please let me know.

life with love, break-up and lots of distractions

Few Lesssons:

1. People change and therefore, when they do and you don’t find the person you fell in love with, there’s no point in carrying out.

2. You should and must get out of a relationship if it turns exploitative. It helps you save what you once shared, what was once beautiful.

3. Take care of your health and your mental sanity. Hehe!

4. That work is what counts and is the only permanent thing in your life. It fashions your identity. Gives you the pelf, which means freedom and security.

5. Last but not the least; learn to take care of your money.
